History
Hoysala King Ballala was out on an hunting expedition in a green wilderness, when he stopped for refreshments at a jungle hut, where an old woman fed him boiled beans and that led the grateful king to christen the region - 'Bende Kaalu Ooru' that literally means the 'city of boiled beans'.
Another name that is associated with the history of Bangalore is that of Kempe Gowda, who build a mud fort in the region. Small townships - Balepet, Chickpet and Cottonpet were built within the walls of the Bangalore Mud Fort.
Bangalore became a prominent center of commerce and art once the Bijapur Sultans established their hegemony in the region. The Marathas, Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan and the British had their power trysts with Bangalore till the city became the capital of Karnataka after India became independent.
